Synopsis
We took the project with the older house constructed on the land. It was a single storey home in a typical south Indian setting. Post the demolition, we materialised the clients requirements and now Kaarai Kudil as we call it is now a stilt + three story corner building with a north east entrance.
Once we understood the clients personality & lifestyle we designed a home that is deeply rooted in culture & tradition and inclined towards chettinad architecture.
Spatial Planning
The ground floor houses the entrance foyer, parking, store room, and staff quarters. The first floor is a standalone 2 BHK unit, while the second and third floors form a duplex, with living, dining, kitchen, and guest room on the second level, and two bedrooms on the third.
The home connects across all levels both internally and externally. Stepped balconies create a visual link between floors, and the east-facing layout ensures natural light beams through every space.

Design
The building blends contemporary architecture with traditional architectural elements of Chettinad homes. Athangudi tiles, intricate wooden work, open spaces, reclaimed & refurbished wood that once adorned the chettinad palaces are the highlights of this humble retreat.
The material palette of the home is kept very warm and rustic. Textured concrete and brick are one of the prime materials and used throughout the house including the facade. Different flooring materials like Athangudi, black granite, Kota, patterned ceramic tiles are used. A lot of deep reds, burnt orange, greys are used to compliment the interiors.
Kaarai Kudil is a Chettinad retreat in its truest form and creates a tranquil environment within the home. It is a beautiful balance of culture, tradition and heritage within a modern contemporary space. A home of the heritage, from the heritage.
